Following the University of Nottingham’s successful four-year tenure as Big Wednesday hosts, BUCS have today announced a brand new host to the biggest event on the UK university sport calendar.
For the next three years, BUCS Big Wednesday, organized by British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS), will take place at Loughborough University.
The annual event brings together thousands of student-athletes from across the country to compete in a wide range of sports disciplines for an action packed 24 hours of UK university sport.
Loughborough itself has a rich sporting tradition and is widely regarded as one of the top sporting institutions in the world. Having claimed the BUCS Overall Championship for an unprecedented 41 consecutive years, Loughborough has firmly established itself as the undisputed powerhouse of UK university sports.
As the countdown to BUCS Big Wednesday 2024 begins, we take a look at some of the impressive facilities that Loughborough University has to offer.
Loughborough University’s World-Class Sporting Campus
Along with its world-class sports programs, Loughborough University is home to some of the best multi-sport facilities in the UK.
We look at four locations where students will be competing for national titles next year at BUCS Big Wednesday 2024.
Loughborough University Stadium
With six high level performance grass pitches and a seating capacity of up to 3,500, the Loughborough Stadium serves as a hub for various sports including athletics and football.
In recent years, the Stadium has hosted numerous national and international events such as the UEFA European Under 17 Championships and FA International Tournaments.
Swimming Pool Complex
Loughborough’s Swimming Pool Complex features a 50m Olympic-sized pool, as well as separate diving and warm-up pools.
Home to the British Swimming National Centre and British Triathlon Performance Centre, the impressive facility is a training base for some of the world’s most talented swimmers.
Tennis and Squash Centre
Loughborough Tennis Centre is an elite facility that comprises 10 indoor acrylic courts and 3 outdoor tarmacadam courts.
Home to the LTA National Academy, the centre also boasts Performance Analysis facilities and a Physiotherapy room.
Sir David Wallace Sports Hall
The Sir David Wallace (SDW) Sports Hall is the largest indoor multi-sport space on campus and is widely used as a competition venue for sports such as Badminton and Table Tennis.
Along with a tiered seated capacity for 1,500 spectators, the SDW facility comprises of a 3 zone/12 Badminton Court format with a multi-sport scoreboard.

On the 24th March this year, thousands of students from across the UK traveled to the University of Nottingham to represent their universities in BUCS Big Wednesday 2023.
In an action-packed 24 hours of UK university sport, a total of 57 national titles were won as teams in over 16 sports battled it out for national glory.
The annual event which marks the culmination of the UK university sport season, showcased the immense skill and dedication of student-athletes across a diverse range of sports, captivating audiences with thrilling performances and inspiring moments of triumph.
