The final games of 2022 have now been played as UK university sports teams take a well-earned break for the winter period.
University sports teams from up and down the country have played their hearts out during the first term of the 2022/23 academic year. Thousands of students have competed in league fixtures and cup competitions in over 30 different sports during the last couple of months.
Universities have been racking up the BUCS Points since the start of the season, through individual and team performances in leagues, cups, and tournaments.
We look at which university is currently on top as we head into the winter break, as well as which university tops some popular university sports.
Overall BUCS Points Standings
The University of Nottingham are currently leading the way in the BUCS Points leaderboard. Nottingham’s sports teams have enjoyed a fantastic couple of months and hold a 756.5-point advantage over second-place Durham University in the Christmas overall standings.
Nottingham have impressed in not only league action but several Championship events. Medals in events such as Tennis, Table Tennis, and Martial Arts have helped Nottingham take a lead into the overall BUCS Points table at Christmas!

Individual Sport Standings
Football
Loughborough University sits top of the football standings. Loughborough’s Women’s 1st team are top of the BUCS Premier North division after seven wins from nine, whilst their Men’s 3rd Team remains unbeaten before Christmas. Loughborough’s other five men’s teams and three women’s teams are performing well to help earn 269 points.

Rugby Union
The University of Exeter top Rugby Union standings. Both the Men and Women’s 1st teams currently sit in third place in the BUCS Super Rugby and BUCS Women’s Premier (National). Exeter has eight other men’s sides and one further women’s team, with the Men’s 8th team unbeaten heading into Christmas. All 11 teams have contributed to help earn 368.5 points so far.

Basketball
Loughborough University dominates the Basketball table. The 1st teams lead the BUCS Premier North in both Men and Women’s leagues with only a collective three games lost on the season. Loughborough Men’s 2nd also top the league at the winter break in the BUCS Midlands Tier 1. A total of seven teams have contributed to the 214 points this season.

Volleyball
The University of Nottingham lead the Volleyball standings. The Men and Women’s 1st teams both sit in second place in the BUCS Premier North standings with an identical record of seven wins and one loss. Nottingham’s Men’s 3rd and 4th teams lead the BUCS Midlands Tier 3A and 3B, respectively. The University of Nottingham has eight teams that have contributed to the 237 points so far.

Badminton
The University of Nottingham top the Badminton table. Three University of Nottingham teams currently top their respective leagues. The Women’s 1st and 2nd teams are unbeaten in the BUCS Premier North and BUCS Midlands Tier 1 and the Men’s 3rd team leads the BUCS Midlands Tier 3A. Nottingham’s nine teams have contributed to their 279 points this season.
There are set to be more points to be on offer in the Individual Championships at BUCS Nationals in February.

Field Hockey
The University of Exeter sit atop the Hockey standings. Three Exeter teams top the tables in BUCS Leagues with unbeaten records; the Women’s 1st in the BUCS Premier National, the Women’s 3rd in the Western Tier 1 and the Men’s 4th in the Western Tier 2. Exeter has 14 teams in Hockey leagues contributing to 506 points so far this season.

Netball
The University of Exeter leads the Netball table. The 5th and 7th teams lead their respective leagues in the BUCS Western Tier 3 and BUCS Western Tier 6, with the 1st team currently in second place in the BUCS Premier South. Exeter’s seven teams have earned 159 points in the season so far.

Tennis
The University of Nottingham are in control of the Tennis standings. Eight Nottingham teams top men and women’s BUCS leagues. Seven of eight teams are unbeaten in the season, the Men’s 1st team top the BUCS Premier North, the Men’s 3rd lead the Midlands Tier 1, the Men’s 4th team head up the Midlands Tier 2A, the Men’s 7th team top the Midlands Tier 3B. The Women’s 2nd team are top of the BUCS Premier North, the Women’s 3rd team lead the Midlands Tier 1 and the Women’s 6th team top the Midlands Tier 3A. The Men’s 5th teams lead the Midlands 2B after five wins from six matches.
In addition to the points accumulated in the season, the University of Nottingham’s Caleb Chakravarthi & Tom Hands (Champions), Jamie Crowfoot & Arran Trainor earned a total of 24 points in the 2022/23 BUCS Doubles Championship event.
