Taekwondo clubs at universities throughout the U.K. have continued to grow over recent years.
Whilst the last five years has seen considerably quick growth, Taekwondo has been offered by U.K. universities for many years, clubs across the U.K. have competed for a National championship since 1987.
U.K. university Taekwondo clubs offer excellent opportunities for regular training, typically meeting two to four times per week. Many clubs also hold dedicated sessions for members interested in representing their university in competitive events.
Participation in competitions is entirely optional for all members of university Taekwondo clubs across the country. The regular training sessions and fitness benefits of the sport attract many who wish to get involved without competing. University clubs encourage participation at all levels, ensuring that while competition is available for those interested, there’s no pressure to compete.
Taekwondo clubs at universities throughout the U.K. have continued to grow over recent years.

U.K. university Taekwondo clubs provide fantastic opportunity to train regularly. Clubs will meet and train between two and four times per week, often with one dedicated session for those that want to represent the university in competitive events.
Entering into competitive events is completely optional for all members of Taekwondo clubs throughout the country. The regular training sessions and fitness benefits the sport brings attracts many who wishes to get involved in the sport, without wanting to enter into competitive. University clubs would never force members to compete, those will provide competitive events for those who are interested.
The BSTF BUCS Student National Championships Series
The BSTF BUCS Student National Championships Series is a multi-discipline event which takes place each academic year.
Featuring a variety of Taekwondo disciplines, such as WT Rules Sparring (an Olympic discipline), ITF Rules Sparring, Kukkiwon Patterns, Chang-Hon Patterns, and Freestyle Patterns, the series offers students diverse opportunities to represent their university in official competitive events.
The series is made up of 3 championships events:
- Autumn Championships (December)
- Winter Championships (February)
- Spring Championships (March)
Almost 700 student-athletes participated in the last academic year’s BSTF BUCS Student National Championships Series, making it the largest university martial art and combat sport competition in Western Europe!
During each of the three championships, competitors will earn points for their institution which will count towards their university’s overall ranking. Following the final Spring Championship series, the overall National University Champion will be named.
In addition to the University Championship Series, clubs will also provide their students with the option of entering further local and national events, such as the GTUK National Championships and the Scottish International Championships.
