Living Costs

Outside of the annual tuition cost, it is important to consider how much you are likely to spend on your living costs during your time in the UK. The amount of money you spend on living costs can vary greatly on both the location of your selected university and also your lifestyle.

When studying at a London based university

As of December 2020, any incoming student who wishes to study at a London based university would need to demonstrate that they can afford £1,334 in living costs for each month of their course or a maximum of £12,006 if the student is studying a course lasting nine or more months.

Studying at a university outside of London

For study in other parts of the U.K. outside of London the cost of living is less and therefore the amount you must demonstrate to secure you visa are also lower. Students studying outside of London will need to demonstrate that they can support living costs of £1,023 for each month, or a maximum of £9,207 for a course lasting 9 or more months.

Whilst the amount you spend on living costs each month will vary, the U.K. Home Office sets financial requirements that an incoming international student must prove they can meet in order to obtain their visa to pursue their studies in the United Kingdom. If you are unable to provide confirmation of your financial standing, you will not be approved for a student visa.

The amounts set by the home office may or may not accurately reflect your own personal lifestyle but are required for the purpose of securing your visa. Incoming international students may find themselves paying more or less depending on their own personal choices.
